Mitigation of methane emissions

To do its part in the global effort against the climate crisis, Brazil needs to cut its methane emissions, mainly from livestock. The Climate Observatory’s proposal indicates that, with new technologies and sustainable practices, the country could reduce these emissions by 28% by 2035, consolidating climate leadership.

Just Energy Transition

Brazil can reduce 80% of emissions in the energy sector by 2050, according to an OC study, which proposes cutting emissions in the energy sector without relying on carbon capture technologies, focusing instead on a fair and sustainable energy transition. The goal is for the country to become carbon-negative by 2045 through actions in transportation and expansion of renewable energies.

List of solutions for mitigation (reduction, neutralization, or removal) of greenhouse gas emissions, or for local adaptation to the effects of climate change, considering different economic activities in municipalities (waste, electricity, urban mobility, agriculture, and land use change).

Basis for the NDC 2030

This document presents the construction of the emissions scenario until 2030 that underlies the proposal of the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) of OC, analyzing each sector of greenhouse gas emissions and removal sources. A pathway is indicated to achieve a level of net emissions of 400 MtCO2e by 2030.

Historic reduction in emissions

The control of deforestation in the Amazon was the main driver of the largest drop in CO₂ emissions in 15 years in Brazil, with a 12% decrease in 2023. However, emissions from agriculture, transportation, and other biomes, such as the Cerrado and Pantanal, increased, highlighting challenges in meeting the country’s climate targets.

Basis for the NDC 2035

To align with the 1.5°C global warming limit, Brazil must reduce its emissions by 92% by 2035, according to a proposal from the Climate Observatory. The document, released with the support of several organizations, suggests that the country limit its emissions to 200 million tons, leading by example in the fight against the climate crisis.

Methane Reduction

Methane (CH4) is a potent greenhouse gas, 28 times more powerful than CO2 in warming the planet. At COP26, over a hundred countries signed the Global Methane Pledge, committing to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030. Brazil, the fifth-largest emitter of methane, can reduce its emissions by 36% by 2030, contributing to this global goal.

Atlantic Forest NDC

The Atlantic Forest is crucial for Brazil's greenhouse gas emissions. Strategies such as forest restoration, reduction of fossil fuel use, and implementation of low-carbon agricultural practices can significantly contribute to reducing emissions, driving a transition to a greener and more sustainable economy.

In addition to human tragedies, Covid-19 has impacted Brazilian emissions, with increases in sectors such as livestock and reductions in energy and industry. However, total emissions in 2020 may increase due to deforestation in the Amazon, contradicting climate goals and requiring an integrated approach to the health and climate crises.
